This Month: Quiet Girl
The Quiet Girl, directed by Colm Bairéad, is a quiet, deeply affecting coming-of-age drama set in rural Ireland in 1981. The film follows Cáit, a withdrawn nine-year-old girl from a neglected and overcrowded family, who is sent away for the summer to live with distant relatives on a farm.
In this new environment, she experiences kindness and stability for the first time, gradually emerging from her silence as she forms a bond with her foster parents. The film’s restrained storytelling—told largely through Cáit’s perspective—emphasizes small gestures, unspoken emotions, and the healing power of care.
As the summer unfolds, a hidden grief within the household surfaces, deepening the emotional stakes. Ultimately, The Quiet Girl becomes a tender meditation on love, loss, and belonging, showing how even brief moments of compassion can profoundly shape a child’s sense of self and future.
PARKING IS NON-EXISTANT at the church, please plan to walk, park on the street or call SV for a ride at least 48 hours ahead at 415-332-3325. Thanks!
