SV Film Group hosts, Rev. Paul Mowry and our own 'Chef' Joey both graduated from NYU Film School and love finding interesting films to watch and discuss as a group.  The group meets downstairs in the Church Hall.  Parking is difficult so be sure to plan to walk or request a ride from Sausalito Village.

This month:  Hamnet

Hamnet:

Hamnet (2025), directed by Chloé Zhao and based on Hamnet, a historical drama based on Maggie O’Farrell’s novel, explores the emotional lives of William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes after the death of their young son. The film unfolds like a multi-orchestral symphony of grief—layering memory, silence, and nature into a deeply immersive portrait of loss and love. This lyrical structure shows how personal tragedy reverberates through Shakespeare’s later work, particularly Hamlet. Starring Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal, the film was widely praised for its emotional depth and poetic storytelling.

In terms of awards, Hamnet achieved major recognition. It won Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Actress (Buckley) at the Golden Globe Awards. At the Academy Awards, Buckley won Best Actress, with additional nominations for the film. It also received two honors at the BAFTA Awards, including Outstanding British Film. At the Screen Actors Guild Awards, Buckley earned Best Actress, cementing the film’s acclaim across major industry awards.
